An ‘ark’ with three cypress trees whose roots are immersed in a basin of water stands in the background of the Arsenale Nord. From afar, Arena for a Tree by artist Klaus Littmann (1951) looks like a capsule of growing seeds, permeable to air, water, and light.
Up close, it is at the same time sculpture, architecture, and podium. A grandstand with seats which becomes an accessible place for contemplation and reflection on the fundamental role of trees in the global ecosystem, particularly in relation to global warming, making them symbols of sustainability.
