BAYA

1931, Bordj El Kiffan, Algeria
1998, Blida, Algeria

Naïve, surrealist, outsider, orientalist: Baya never accepted labels for her art, which was appreciated by Picasso, Breton, Braque and DuBuffet. Though difficult, her life also featured lucky encounters straight out of a fairy tale: so much so that she created a fascinating character like a new Sherazade in a world of only women, with large eyes, reclining and immersed in psychedelic gardens, in the benevolent company of fantastic animals. A paradise without a man in sight.
