A masterpiece of Indian cinema, directed by Girish Kasaravalli, explores the themes of tradition and ostracism in a rural Indian society. Based on a novel by the writer Ananthamurthy, the film offers a realistic portrait of rural life and subtly criticizes the hypocrisy of a patriarchal society still too tied to traditions, to the point of losing contact with reality. Thanks to Kasaravalli, a modern artistic sensitivity begins to emerge in southern India that is similar to the Italian political cinema of the 1970s.
