Fifty years ago, Kronos Quartet lay the groundwork for what would become an army of musicians whose interests divide equally between classical music, avant-garde, and independent rock. This explains the birth of the Attacca Quartet in 2003, who have so far been awarded two Grammys. On October 1 at Ca’ Giustinian, Attacca will play a 1970 composition by Georg Crumb, Black Angels, a lamentation for the Vietnam War. The show will begin with a performance by the Amsterdam String Quartet, who will play Daisy, a composition commissioned by the Venice Music Biennale to David Lang. Lang is a post-minimalist composer who founded Bang on a Can, another great team/organization working to popularize ‘soft’ contemporary music.
