After presentations in Kiev, Rotterdam and Vienna, “GAIA-24. Opera del mondo” (90’), the inter-genre and inter-linguistic opera by the Ukrainian company Opera Aperta, arrives in Venice. Through video projections and live musical productions, the dystopian multimedia restage deals with the devastating ecological and humanitarian consequences of the Russian explosion of the Kakhovka hydroelectric plant (2023), and will be staged on Saturday, October 26, 2024 at 6pm at Ocean Space, exceptionally open for one evening after the closure of the exhibition and season 2024. The performance will be followed by a conversation with the artists about their artistic practices connected to the cultural ramifications and global challenges associated with water.
The project has been implemented by the Ukrainian Institute in collaboration with the Ukrainian Pavilion at the 60th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale, the Goethe-Institut Ukraine, the ERSTE Foundation, Ocean Space / TBA21–Academy, OPERA APERTA – laboratory for contemporary opera, proto produkciia agency, and with the support of the Museums for Ukraine initiative.
“GAIA-24. Opera del mondo” is a geo-historical opera about war and its ecological traces, about nature’s
rebellion against the destructive power of man. The Ukrainian company, consisting of Roman Grygoriv and Illia Razumeiko, merges the changing landscape and the human body in an open musical and theatrical ritual process, staging in 90 minutes the motifs of destruction and reconstruction in the mirror of current and historical ecological catastrophes. The show is divided into three acts: the first, Songs of Mother Earth, features music from around the world. The second, Cabaret Metastasis, includes scenes based on the plasticity of the naked body. The third, Dance for Mother Earth, is a carnival of musical genres, ranging from rap to popular songs.
