Elias Sime explores the impact of globalization and technology on the human psyche
by Marisa Santin

At the Tanarte space with Dichotomy Jerba, a new chapter of the Tightrope series, Sime weaves, layers, and intertwines salvaged technological elements into lyrical and complex sculptural assemblages that speak of the present.

Facing the impact of globalization and technology on the human psyche, Elias Sime presents a new body of work in which technological components are intertwined into lyrical and intricate sculptural assemblages. With a multidisciplinary and material-focused practice, the artist from Adis Abeba, who was also present in 2022 in Cecilia Almani’s The Milk of Dreams, continues his work of layering common objects transforming them into abstract compositions that reflect on the impact of globalization and technology on the human psyche. Sime’s use of colors, patterns, and grids often hints at natural landscapes, evoking both the environment and man’s footprint on Earth.

This exhibition particularly focuses on the centrality of the mobile phone in daily life. Sime considers the device a status symbol, but its omnipresence makes it a metaphor laden with ethical, ecological, and geopolitical implications that demand deep contemplation on the fragility of an increasingly interconnected world.
