This is not your ordinary fairy tale. Everybody knows about Cinderella, that’s true, but Giorgio Madia’s 2011 version, arranged for the Milan Ballet, conquered all audiences for the originality of its staging. The story, memorialized by Charles Perrault, is re-set in the 1950s: gender roles, clichés, and all. Scenes and costumes, created by Cordelia Matthes, help us into a pastel world where even Cinderella’s clothes might get mixed up with the tapestry, owed to her status in the family. Her stepmother and
stepsisters, all played by hilarious drag performers, her scatterbrain godmother, her magic coach, the prince: all will entertain and enchant you. Rossini replaces Prokofiev to accompany amazing dance moments.
