At the Palazzetto Bru Zane – Centre de musique romantique française in Venice, the cine-concert series continues, in which the magic of silent films merges with the emotion of live music. These events revive the historical tradition of accompanying silent films with musical performances directly in the theatre, creating a unique and engaging atmosphere right next to the screen. Disguise is the quintessence of Carnival, but also that of early cinema, which had among its unforgettable masks that of the Tramp, the little tramp invented by Charlie Chaplin: a fake moustache, oversized trousers and shoes, and even the memory of a lost elegance in his jacket and cane. But this was not Chaplin’s only face: in The Masquerader (1914) we will get a glimpse of the “behind the scenes” comedy of the Tramp, who will find himself wearing a female costume; and then we will find him as an officer of the soldiers of Seville in Burlesque on Carmen (1916), a homage to and parody of a contemporary film (1915) by Cecil B. DeMille, who made Bizet’s opera (1875) and Mérimée’s novel (1845) his own. The event will be introduced by a video presentation curated by Marco Bellano, and accompanied by an innovative musical commentary on the piano constructed by Gabriele Dal Santo from compositions by Georges Bizet. This will be an exclusive foretaste of the festival that the Palazzetto Bru Zane will subsequently dedicate to the composer, from 29 March to 16 May 2025.
