Throughout his oeuvre, Duchamp questioned the traditional hierarchy between original and copy. Replicating his work in different media, on various scales, and in limited editions, Duchamp radically redefined what constitutes a work of art and, by extension, the identity of the artist. The centerpiece of the exhibition is the Box in a Valise (1935-‘41), a portable museum of 69 miniature replicas and reproductions of Duchamp’s work, which Peggy Guggenheim acquired from the artist in 1941.
