(2023, UK, 141')

Based on the 1992 novel of the same name by Alasdair Gray, the irreverent new work by Yorgos Lanthimos revisits the typical canons of Gothic cinema with surprising creativity, using a cast of the highest calibre. When his daughter Bella kills herself to escape her husband’s violence, Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe), a scientist as brilliant as he is nonconformist, decides to bring her back to life, transforming her into a sort of Frankenstein-woman, played by an irrepressible Emma Stone. Eager to learn about the world and driven by an insatiable sexual appetite, Bella escapes with a debauched, elegant lawyer on a whirlwind adventure across continents. Spunky, moody and utterly free of the prejudices of her time, she decides to fight to defend equality and freedom. The film was a huge success with audiences and critics, winning the Golden Lion for Best Film in Venice and also triumphing in the same category at the Golden Globes, when leading actress Emma Stone was awarded Best Actress.
