Tenor Flannan Obé, in a triple role as performer, creator, and director, and his jolly fellows invite us into a world of undeservedly forgotten repertoire. Ne vedremo delle belle! (loosely: ‘That should be good for a laugh!’), the upcoming show at Palazzetto Bru Zane, brings back to life the celebrities of café-chantants, a place of entertainment that peaked in nineteenth-century Europe and a smorgasbord of performing art, from poetry reading to exotic dance to acrobatics. “Our show – explains Obé – will give you a taste of this important piece of the history of chanson and of the places it used to be performed. We will show the sobriety of means, due to theatres taking the lion’s share of everything, though also the diversity of the entertainment offer – monologues, dance, arias – and of tones.” It sure seems there will be something for everybody.
