From the slums of Recife, in the north-east of Brazil, to a contemporary jazz icon. Amaro Freitas, born in 1991, a rising jazz star, has worked doggedly to become the artist he is today, having Thelonious Monk and Chick Corea as models. At a very young age, he gained the attention of international critics for ‘an approach to the keyboard so unique as to be astonishing’. His 2016 debut album, Sangue Negro, as well as the subsequent Rasif and Sankofa, garnered near-unanimous acclaim from audiences and critics alike.
