They sometimes come back – and surprise us, again and again. Words of Beetlejuice, the spirit conjured by Tim Burton once, and again thirty-eight years later to open the 81st Venice Film Festival. Words of Venice Film Festival art director Alberto Barbera, too, with sixteen ‘appearances’ under his belt and the real spirit of the Festival, certainly the one who served longest. What a strike of genius, what an honour, and what great branding for the VFF, which has never been so generous in discovery and consecration as it has been with Barbera at the helm. On the red carpet for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice – the happy, good-luck-inviting opening for a line-up that is the richest in art and stars – will be Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara, as will Willem Dafoe (recently nominated art director of the Venice Theatre Biennale), Monica Bellucci, and Jenna Ortega of Wednesday fame.
Opening the Orizzonti section will be Valerio Mastandrea’s second feature, Feeling Better. Mastandrea, a career actor, offers a strong and “deeply personal” story, starring Dolores Fonzi, Giorgio Montanini, and Lino Musella. Also starting off today is the independent Venice Days programme, directed by Gaia Furrer. Two films in their line-up: Open Couple by Federica Di Giacomo, an adaptation of a 1983 theatre piece by Franca Rame and Dario Fo, and Super Happy Forever by Kohei Igarashi, showing the ‘before’ and the ‘after’ of a love story. We laugh, we think, we love here on the Lido. And we come back…
