The big day has arrived for the quintessential priestess of rock – or rather, of punk, at least in attitude if not exactly in sonic style. Yes, because Patti Smith, the highly anticipated star of today’s masterclass at Isola Edipo in Sala Laguna at 6 pm, marked a path in that fiery, tense, nihilistic twilight of the ‘70s. With her irreducible irreverence, she built a bridge, an authentic hinge between the foundational and unrepeatable generation of rock (let’s not forget, Because the Night is a song written by the Boss, which she then magically made her own forever) and the new destructive yet reconstructive language of that punk scene which, more than any other, has shaped our contemporary era, transforming an attitude that was ‘simply’ rebellious into a field where calling it crossover doesn’t even scratch the surface—intersecting with fashion, graphics, urban art (especially graffiti), photography, and comics, all woven into a dense, intertwined dialogue with the noise of distorted guitars.
The masterclass, organized by Isola Edipo and Giornate degli Autori in collaboration with the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain, will be conducted by her together with Stephan Crasneanscki (Soundwalk Collective). It will be an audiovisual journey through cinema and poetry, starting from Correspondences, the musical project they collaborated on, which includes two tracks titled Pasolini and Medea. After all, Patti’s visceral passion for Italy and its poetry is well-known, especially for Pier Paolo Pasolini, with whom she surely shared a free and open approach to making art that straddles the most varied expressive languages.
