The official jury of the Isola Edipo Prize is hard at work: Francesca d’Aloja, Esmeralda Calabria, and Federica Di Giacomo, accompanied by a jury of young students and closely followed by the tireless Silvia Jop, who, along with Sibylle Righetti and Enrico Vianello, form the heart and soul of Isola Edipo, will announce the winner of the 2024 edition dedicated to the centenary of Franco Basaglia today.
“This year, Isola Edipo,” Angelo Righetti recalled during the Riprendiamoci i diritti (“Reclaiming Our Rights”) event, “will present, for the seventh time, the Sustainability and Inclusion Award. Art is art because it includes, speaking without words, continually becoming the other. In these times of war, resignation to inequality, and rebellion against the grim fate awaiting us if we don’t repair the damage done to the environment and human relationships, this festival has been a truly vital cultural balm. Patti Smith shed light on Pasolini, presenting an unforgettable spectacle of art, words, and music as a barrier against wars, where ‘the rich and powerful send the children of the poor to die,’ as Gino Strada used to say. The syncretic expressive form of all the arts brought to the Lido and the festival by Patti Smith, navigating on the boat that hosted Pasolini, has placed a precious seal on Venice 81.
In line with its history, Oedipus Rex celebrated the centenary of Franco Basaglia, the first to close asylums, relaunching social rights and restoring human value to diversity, madness, equality, and irrationality. All of this was done by giving strength and supremacy to emotional practice, making techniques secondary.”
It has been an intense few days along Riva Corinto and Sala Laguna, where masterclasses, meetings, and screenings offered ethical perspectives and new poetic imaginaries, focusing on climate change, rights, differences, and freedom.
“Once again this year,” says Sibylle Righetti, “the challenge of dialogue between culture in all its forms, the city, and the Venice Film Festival has been won. Through the relationships and connections formed, we are already thinking with renewed strength and growing enthusiasm about the coming year.”
