A Venice suspended between reality and imagination is the image chosen for Venice 82. In the official poster, presented at the 2025 Film Festival, illustrator Manuele Fior depicts three young people above the city’s rooftops, performing a scene that pays homage both to Tiepolo and to the Nouvelle Vague.
“My proposal for the image of the Film Festival,” Fior said, “was to raise the horizon, above the rooftops and among the Venetian chimneys, which, isolated from their context, seem to belong to a fantastic, imaginary place. Yet they are in plain sight for anyone walking through the calli. In a dizzying climb toward the sky, against the backdrop of a cloud stolen from Tiepolo, I imagined three youngsters miming the timeless gesture of cinema: framing a scene with their fingers, marking the time with a clapperboard, and beginning to act. These characters recall the spontaneous and iconoclastic spirit of the Nouvelle Vague, of Jules et Jim, or the protagonists of Bande à part. They evoke the playful origins of art and, from an unprecedented and daring perspective, look far ahead toward the luminous space of cinema to come.”
Fumettista and celebrated Italian illustrator Manuele Fior (Cesena, 1975) has authored numerous books, some awarded in Italy and France, such as Cinquemila chilometri al secondo, Celestia, and Hypericon. He has contributed illustrations to publications like The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, and Le Monde, and lives in Venice, where he graduated in Architecture at IUAV University.
