Yesterday we attended the workshop organized by Isola Edipo – Cinema on Fire, the program that runs alongside the Venice Film Festival, bringing a laboratory dedicated to rights, inclusion, and practices of freedom to the Lido.

The masterclass featured exceptional artists: Caroline Poggi (Ajaccio, France, 1990) and Jonathan Vinel (Toulouse, France, 1988), an artistic duo awarded the Golden Bear at Berlin in 2014 for Tant qu’il nous reste des fusils à pompe, and Céline Sciamma (Pontoise, France, 1978), who in recent years has redefined how adolescence, bodies, and identities are portrayed, opening new possibilities for cinematic language.
In Sala Laguna, through screenings of excerpts from their best-known works – Water Lilies, Tomboy, and Portrait of a Lady on Fire for Sciamma, Tant qu’il nous reste des fusils à pompe and other short films for Poggi and Vinel – the meeting offered a journey into the origins of their cinema. Their work strongly emphasizes a common theme in today’s society: young people as a sensitive, fragile, and ever-changing territory, carriers of imagination and therefore of radical questions about the world around them.
In their films, adolescence is not depicted as a mere, albeit complex, transitional phase to be overcome, but as a genuine political and creative space where society’s contradictions unfold in all their force, and where new possibilities simultaneously emerge. The masterclass succeeded in giving the many young participants a tangible sense of being part of an active social process, of engaging with a language that concerns them and can still be reinvented starting from their perspective. Once again, Isola Edipo hit the mark.
