Among the most relevant expressions of the new Italian musical generation, Alessandro D’Alessandro, who has always been devoted to contaminations between different genres, has brought a typical instrument of popular tradition such as the accordion into dialogue with other styles, rhythms and harmonies, considerably expanding its expressive abilities and sound. His most recent exploration of songwriting and folk songs also takes this direction, with the transposition of some classics into the language of an accordion which, in his hands, seems to take on “the breath of an orchestra”. The intimate sound of his bellows instrument is supported by a very personal use of electronics, effects and real-time loops; harmonic and rhythmic overlays, played directly on the accordion, through an original percussion system of the instrument. The project transformed into the album Canzoni – for prepared accordion & electronics (Squilibri) released in June 2021. The album sees the participation of many guests including Elio, Sergio Cammariere, Musica Nuda, David Riondino, Neri Marcorè, Sonia Bergamasco, Joan Manuel Serrat, Peppe Voltarelli, Daniele Sepe, Roberto Angelini, and others. The album was elected best Italian world music album for 2021 by the jury of the Loano Prize, the most important sector award in Italy.
