Awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement by the Biennale Danza – the first ever granted to a company – the Bangarra Dance Theatre presents Terrain, a work born from listening to the landscape and from the profound relationship between body, land and memory.
“Watch the waters rise and fall as we reconnect with the energy of the earth and the resilient spirit of those who care for their future”: these words mark the starting point of Terrain, a work inspired by Kati Thanda–Lake Eyre, Australia’s largest salt lake, a site of extraordinary mutability and symbolic significance. Choreographed by Frances Rings, the piece unfolds in nine sections and features the company’s eighteen dancers, performers of a movement language rooted in the cultures of Australia’s First Nations.
The performance brings into relation the force of the body and that of the landscape, constructing a dramaturgy that intertwines physical energy and ancestral dimension. The land thus becomes a second skin, a living archive of ancient knowledge and a space of shared responsibility, oriented towards care and transmission to future generations.
