The Festival’s opening day brings us face to face with the art of illustrator Joanna Quinn, who can boast no fewer than three Oscar nominations for Best Animated Short Film, a testament to the incredible consistency of quality she has maintained since the 1980s. If works such as Wife of Bath and The Canterbuty Tales have made her famous and won her numerous awards (including a BAFTA and an Emmy), it is certainly the vicissitudes of her alter ego Beryl that make her production of extraordinary interest, with a constant and extremely topical work that, from Girls’ Night Out to the recent Affairs of the Art (the last of her Oscar-nominated works), reflects on the role of women in society, the pressures she is forced to endure and the impossible perfection required of her body.
For the international competition there will be screenings of La notte – The Night, Martina Generali, Simone Pratola, Francesca Sofia Rosso, Italy, 6’30” Panique À La Noce – Panic at the wedding, Haythem Ben Hmida, Tunisia, 13’04” The borders never die, Hamidreza Arjomandi, Islamic Republic of Iran, 14’50 Oyunbozan – Game, interrupted, Ilayda Iseri, Turkey, 15′ Something’s wrong, Polina Khalenko, Russian Federation/Kazakhstan, 22’48” Khutaa ‘ab – Father’s footsteps, Mohamad W.
