The body as a living archive of historical, social and political memory lies at the heart of Láhppon/Lost, the new work by choreographer, director and filmmaker Elle Sofe Sara. Her practice is rooted in Sámi culture and in the totalising landscape of the far northern regions of Scandinavia – stretching across Norway, Russia, Finland and Sweden – which functions both as origin and creative force.
The piece revisits and refracts the 1852 Kautokeino uprising, a pivotal moment in Sámi history marked by resistance against Norwegian authorities and policies of forced assimilation. Through this historical lens, the choreography reflects on the mechanisms of fear, injustice and hope, transforming them into performative and political material.
For the first time, Elle Sofe Sara directs a section of the ballet ensemble of the Oslo Opera House together with Icelandic choreographer Hlín Diego Hjálmarsdóttir, involving 19 of the 70 company dancers in a work that brings contemporary practice into dialogue with collective memory.
