Awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Biennale Teatro 2026, Emma Dante presents the world premiere of I fantasmi di Basile (The Ghosts of Basile). This new work marks a return to the visionary and baroque universe of Giambattista Basile, an author who has already been central to pivotal milestones in her directorial journey, from La scortecata and Pupo di zucchero to Re Chicchinella.
The production unfolds as a dialogue with the figures, images, and obsessions that inhabit Basile’s fairy tales, recalling fragments of the previous trilogy and bringing back to the stage presences suspended between memory, body, and apparition. Emma Dante recognizes a deeply contemporary resonance in the Neapolitan author’s writing: a fantastical dimension that, beneath its linguistic richness and visionary framework, maintains a powerful connection to reality.
Thus, I fantasmi di Basile moves between fairy tale and theatrical incarnation, evoking characters and atmospheres that return as living presences, capable of transcending time and speaking directly to the present.
