The Historical Archive of the Venice Biennale presents the special project Expositio Sancti Evangelii secundum Iohannem, a staging of the Commentary on the Gospel of John by the Dominican theologian and mystic Johannes Eckhart. The event takes place at the Portego delle Colonne of the Scuola Grande di San Marco, involving theater actors and the Cappella Marciana Choir under the direction of Maestro Marco Gemmani. The dramaturgy is curated by Antonello Pocetti, with scenography by Antonino Viola, video design by Andrew Quinn, and sound projection by Thierry Coduys.
Each evening explores fundamental themes such as the Logos, Being, Love, the dualism of good/evil, and the dialectic between soul and body. Distinguished guests, including Cardinal José Tolentino de Mendonça, Peter Sloterdijk, and Massimo Cacciari, introduce each session. Actors Federica Fracassi, Leda Kreider, and Dario Aita recite excerpts from the Commentary in Latin and Italian, accompanied by Gregorian chants.
The immersive and scenographically innovative work invites the audience to reflect on the message of the Gospel of John and Eckhart’s thought, offering a unique artistic and spiritual experience in the monumental complex of the Ospedale Civile SS. Giovanni e Paolo.
