The Berggruen Institute Europa, under the direction of philosopher, writer, and social entrepreneur Lorenzo Marsili, organized a week filled with meetings at the Casa dei Tre Oci, commencing on June 3. The event started with an opening speech by renowned philosopher Giorgio Agamben, followed by a stimulating series of dialogues featuring Hans Ulrich Obrist, Agamben, Carlo Rovelli, Francesca Bria, Lea Ypi, Rana Dasgupta, and Marina Garcés. On June 4 and 5, a closed-door workshop titled “Europe as a Planetary Laboratory” will bring together philosophers, technology experts, economists, and writers. The sessions will include discussions on topics such as “The Transnational Democratic Odyssey” with Kalypso Nicolaïdis and Niccolò Milanese, “European Political Economy” with Lorenzo Marsili, Lea Ypi, and Fabrizio Tassinari, “The Designer Economy” with Pascal Lamy and Gary Gerstle, and “Visions of Technological Sovereignty” with Francesca Bria and Denis ‘Jaromil’ Roio. Additionally, “Europe, China, and a New Planetary Ethos” will be explored with Wang Hui and Mi You.
From June 5 to 7, the second annual convocation of the Tre Oci Council, a private gathering of international leaders and thinkers, will take place. Notable attendees include Guy Verhofstadt, Gordon Brown, Ronnie Chan, Helen Thorning-Schmidt, Susan Thornton, Bruno Maçães, Pascal Lamy, Kai-Fu Lee, Evan Spiegel, and others. The discussions will cover topics such as the deterioration of relations between China and the West, Ukraine, and climate change.
The week concludes with a public aperitif and an architectural tour led by Venetian architect Silvio Fassi on June 8 at 5 pm, providing an opportunity to toast the future of the Berggruen Institute Europa in Venice. Participants will have the chance to explore the neo-Gothic Casa dei Tre Oci and learn about its rich historical past before it undergoes restoration in preparation for the grand reopening in 2024.
