Aldo works as a worker in a sugar factory in the Po Valley and has been living with Irma for seven years: a little girl was born from their love. Irma’s husband has been emigrating for years and one day news arrives of his death. Aldo wants to marry the woman but Irma confesses to him that she no longer loves him: her heart belongs to another man. Aldo protests, threatens, but all is useless, Irma will not be moved. Aldo leaves the factory and the village, and starts wandering with the child through the villages of the region. He returns to Elvia, the fiancée he had left seven years earlier to live with Irma, but at her house, he turns his attention to his sister Edera.
