Romantic music for multiple cellos is rare, and mostly devoted to teaching pieces. Jacques Offenbach’s Cours méthodiques de duos pour deux violoncelles (1839 – 1855) are a series of duets sorted from ‘very easy’ to ‘very difficult’. Other cello teachers like Auguste Franchomme and Félix Battanchon wrote pieces for cello ensembles, so as to have all their students play together.
