At the conclusion of the workshop Shylock. Venice Beyond Money, which has seen a group of over sixty Venetian citizens questioning the relationship between the city and money, the Teatro di Cittadinanza returns to the stage of the Teatro Goldoni on Sunday 28 April at 6 pm. After having opened the doors of the Rialto Courtroom and the Banca Intesa Sanpaolo headquarters in Campo Manin with two site-specific performances, the final action entitled L’incanto non ha prezzo (Enchantment has no price) will be a tribute to the immeasurable intangible heritage that constitutes Venice, to its enormous and unique beauty. Thanks to Teatro di Cittadinanza, a theatre workshop project conceived by Venetian director Mattia Berto for the Teatro Stabile del Veneto – Teatro Nazionale, performer-citizens have animated public and private spaces in the city with thematic performance actions starting from places. More than other capitals of the world, Venice lives from its relationship with money, because it is a city of merchants and the riches that made it grow are commercial treasures, born from exchanges of jewels, spices and perfumes. The 23/24 season’s citizenship theatre has chosen William Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice to make its moves and reflect on the city’s relationship with the god of money and power. By investigating the relationship that everyone has with money, the past and present will be addressed through the Bard’s timeless words.
