The second chapter of Romance Familiare, the Silver Lion-winning trilogy by Mario Banushi, Goodbye, Lindita explores themes of loss and nostalgia through the figure of an adopted mother, Lindita, the father’s second wife.
Drawing on the memory of Balkan funeral rituals from the artist’s childhood, the performance translates them into a silent, suspended stage composition, where grief is conveyed less through language than through gesture, atmosphere, and physical presence. Set within a domestic interior, a family moves through mourning in an intimate and restrained dimension, until near-supernatural elements open a fissure in which memory, imagination, and dream overlap.
The audience is thus drawn into an inward, intimate journey that engages with a universal question: how do we say goodbye to those we love? In this fragile space between presence and absence, the home becomes an emotional terrain rather than a refuge, as Dimitris Papanikolaou writes: “Home is not a harbour, not the place you arrive at or return to; home is where it hurts. And it is where you learn to heal.”
