The end of a love story that condemns the future and marks an entire generation: myths go on living in our everyday gestures, in violence, in sacrifice, in love. In a distorted present, an impossible love unfolds between an older woman and her young husband, rumoured to actually be her son. Drawing on Jean Cocteau’s La voce umana (The Human Voice), the piece turns Jocasta into an anonymous woman, protagonist of a story born from the poetic tension of tragic love, in all its purity and tragic predictability.
The staging is essential — a few objects, a physical language, the voice used as a musical instrument — to tell the madness of the house of Oedipus, in a possible, contemporary Thebes seen through a female gaze. Michela Lucenti, choreographer, dancer and artistic director of Balletto Civile, plays Jocasta, drawing on the latest version of Euripides’ The Phoenician Women; Oedipus is played by Thybaud Monterisi, performer and singer-songwriter, live sound interlocutor.
