On Tuesday, July 28 at 6 pm, Ca’ Giustinian will host a conversation with choreographer Molissa Fenley, followed by a screening of State of Darkness: Part Four (2024, 64′), directed by Elliot Caplan.
The documentary follows the restaging process of State of Darkness, documenting dancer Cassandra Trenary rehearsing with Molissa Fenley in preparation for the work’s presentation at the Chautauqua Festival. Through a carefully crafted visual approach, Caplan translates the language of dance into cinema, capturing the creative dialogue between choreographer and performer and the dancer’s artistic transformation throughout the rehearsal process.
Directed by Elliot Caplan, the film features Cassandra Trenary performing choreography by Molissa Fenley. Cinematography, editing and sound are by Elliot Caplan and Donald Dubois, while historical research and writing are by Ann Murphy.

The screening will be presented in English without subtitles.
