Cello music was revolutionized in the nineteenth century. Gone were the days of its use for harmonic basslines, the cello earned its spot as a solo instrument. In France, cello sonatas ap peared before their violin counterpart. Camille Saint-Saëns expanded greatly the number of cello pieces, followed by the work of César Franck, Léon Boëllmann, and Albéric Magnard.
