TERRITORY OF CO-COGNITION

Automation, ethics, built environment

Territories of Co-Cognition” is a half-day symposium presenting current research from The Bartlett School of Architecture and its wider network. The event will explore the opportunities and challenges of automation and artificial intelligence in developing new world-making strategies.

In dialogue with this year’s Venice Architecture Biennale — Intelligens. Natural. Artificial. Collective — the symposium reflects on the notion of collective intelligence and its relationship with the built environment, focusing on how human and non-human forces interact in shaping our habitats. Automation is approached as both a collective resource and an ethical concern, with the aim of fostering knowledge exchange and cross-disciplinary dialogue at the intersection of architectural practice, urban studies, and philosophy.

Today’s discourse on AI is often marked by an artificial split between ethical concerns and creative applications. As a result, design disciplines rarely engage with fields like philosophy or ethics, and vice versa. This symposium seeks to bridge that gap by opening a transdisciplinary space where creative and theoretical approaches to AI converge, bringing together different schools of thought to share methodologies, research outcomes, and conceptual frameworks.

Speakers include: Luciana Parisi (Duke University), Patricia Reed (DAE/Folkwang), Fiona Zisch (The Bartlett), Julian Besems and Andrew Porter (The Bartlett), and Will Cavendish (Arup).
