In his art – whether on canvas, paper, or glass – Antonello Viola (b. 1966) constructs a chromatic perimeter where painting becomes a reflective space for the search for the absolute through a process of accumulation, stratification, and sedimentation. By superimposing layers of colour and then removing, scraping, and erasing, the artist transforms the invisible into the visible. In his work on glass, Viola’s engagement with Venice and its islands embraces and reinterprets the vibrant relationship between light, sky, and water that has characterized the city’s pictorial tradition for centuries, here translated into to a blend of gold, turquoise, and blue on fragile, transparent glass.
