When British photographer Francis Frith visited Abu Simbel during his first trip to Egypt (1856–1857), Venetian-born brothers Antonio and Felice Beato were traveling across the Mediterranean and Middle East. Already known for documenting the Crimean War, they later photographed the Indian Rebellion and the Second Opium War. Around 1860, Antonio settled in Cairo, producing remarkable images of Egypt’s temples, architecture, and landscapes. To mark 200 years since his birth and 40 years since Ikona Gallery’s first Venice show, Antonio Beato. Return to Venice (Oct 15-Jan 12, 2026) at Palazzo Fortuny presents rare photographs from Venetian and international collections.
