CANICULA

In Between Art Film

Curated by Alessandro Rabottini and Leonardo Bigazzi, Canicula brings the “Trilogy of Uncertainties” to a close: the long-term journey conceived by Fondazione In Between Art Film, which since 2022 has transformed the Complesso dell’Ospedaletto into a constantly shifting moving images organism. After the uncertain light of Penumbra and the milky suspension of Nebula, this third chapter confronts the scorching embrace of the dog days of summer, when heat becomes an absolute presence and vision falters under an excess of brightness. Understood as both an atmospheric and symbolic condition, the canicula becomes the prism through which to question a present dominated by information saturation, environmental pressures, social fragilities, and sensory overload. Within this incandescent framework, the exhibition stages bodies, memories, and ideas under stress, evoking phenomena of erosion, collapse, and transformation.

The exhibition premieres eight new site-specific video installations, commissioned from artists of different generations and backgrounds: Lawrence Abu Hamdan, Massimo D’Anolfi and Martina Parenti, Roman Khimei and Yarema Malashchuk, Janis Rafa, P. Staff, Wang Tuo, Yuyan Wang, and Maya Watanabe. Produced by Fondazione In Between Art Film, the works continue its investigation into the narrative, political, and perceptual potential of moving images, as well as the dialogue between heterogeneous languages and temporalities.
