Emergency’s hospitals map out a path that travels across Africa, starting from the Atlantic Sea until the Red Sea. In this hospitals work doctors, surgeons, nurse practitioners, technicians, anaesthetists, radiologists, administrators and gardeners. They are the protagonists of In the shade of the baobab. Emergency and the beauty of caring, a photo exhibit by photojournalist and reporter Monica Bulaj. With a series of shots taken in Sierra Leone, Uganda and Sudan the photographer tells the stories of everyday difficulties and sometime defeats, endemic misfortunes and unpredictable emergencies.“In this reportage I tell stories like Aisha’s, who teaches  to child victims of oesophageal perforation like her how to eat again. I talk about a project made in Europe which targets mothers in slums in order to produce soap with an easily gettable poison, or about the challenges that Aminata had to face on her travel across Africa in order to replace her heart valves, undermined by an untreated streptococcal infection. Or about Ibrahim’s rebirth in South Darfur after the umpteenth transfusion due to his sickle cell anemia, a ruthless genetic response to continuous exposure to malaria.”The exhibition, which will open Tuesday, Nov. 15 at 6 p.m., will remain open from Nov. 16 until Jan. 27, 2023. Free admission, Monday through Friday 11 a.m.-5 p.m.
