Through a surprising variety of works embracing drawings, graphic pieces, jewelry, tapestries, historical documents, books, magazines, photographs, documentaries, and films, the exhibition traces the path of the unique and deeply personal aesthetic of Jean Cocteau (1889–1963), revisiting the highlights of the tumultuous career of the enfant terrible of French artistic culture. Curated by Kenneth E. Silver, a renowned expert on the artist and art historian at New York University, the exhibition aims to shed light on the extraordinary versatility – and skill as a juggler – that characterized Cocteau’s artistic language, an aspect for which he was often criticized by his contemporaries.
