Maqbool Fida Husain (Pandharpur, 1915-London, 2011) is the most celebrated and internationally recognized Indian artist of the 20th century. His bold and earthy colors and expressive brushstrokes have become the quintessence of Indian Modernism. Weaving together religious, social, literary, and symbolic iconographies in a secular artistic register, Husain expressed his obsession with the richness, diversity, and ethos of India, which he saw as a cultural mosaic.
