PENELOPE. HER JOURNEYS

Through the eyes of three contemporary artists – Gayle Chong Kwan, Stephanie Blake, and Kimiko Yoshida –, the myth of Penelope is reinvented as a space for narration and rewriting, where the female figure takes an active and conscious role, redefining her relationship with history, language, and representation. By freeing her from her traditional attributes of patience and obedience, Penelope becomes a subversive weaver – an ante litteram artist who transformed the loom into a weapon of resistance. The act of weaving thus becomes a strategy of resistance and the construction of time that encourages reflection on the role of women.
