The Saudi Cultural Space in Venice continues its program with The Year of Handicrafts: Craftsmanship, Materials, and Aesthetics of Saudi Arabia, an exhibition celebrating the living traditions and rich artisanal heritage of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Through a curated selection of handcrafted objects, visual testimonies, and regional narratives, the exhibition takes visitors on a journey across Saudi Arabia’s thirteen regions, each represented by one of its most iconic crafts. From weaving and woodcarving to ceramics and embroidery, the show highlights the techniques, materials, and aesthetics that define the cultural identity of each area.
Central to the exhibition is the idea that “Craft is alive”, embodied by artisans who pass down ancient skills while adapting them to contemporary life. Special attention is given to Al-Qatt Al-Asiri, recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This centuries-old practice, maintained by the women of the Asir region, transforms domestic spaces with geometric patterns and symbolic colors, preserving cultural memory across generations.
The exhibition also features an informative mural by the Royal Institute of Traditional Arts (WRTH), documenting the journey of students and graduates through photographs of workshops and creations, highlighting the institute’s role in training artisans and promoting the cultural and economic impact of handicrafts. This is a unique opportunity to explore Saudi Arabia’s artisanal richness, where tradition meets contemporary interpretation, and to witness the skills and stories that keep this vibrant heritage alive.
