The two faces of artist and sculptor Umberto Mastroianni is apparent in the ambivalence of his works. Exhibition Figure e Astrazioni 1931–1996, at Palazzo Pisani Revedin until January 18, 2024, presents a collection of art by Mastroianni created in the immediate post-WWII years, a time that profoundly changed the artist’s style. Before the war, his style was all about the archaic, the ancient, and the classical: his mythological and religious subjects are shaped in terracotta and bronze.
“An extraordinary poetic sense”, commented critics. In following years, his shapes grew dynamic, abstract, geometrical: Mastroianni translated futuristic visions into new, unexplored languages, earning his place as the first Italian abstract sculptor of international renown.
