This diptych featured on our June cover shows the surreal effects of naturally occurring sodium left on the surface of the lakebed at the bottom of a volcanic crater. Surprisingly, Lake Magadi is also known for its flamingos. Before the lake evaporates completely after the rainy season, leaving lifeless sodium behind, flamingos and other wading birds feast on the microorganisms that thrive in the lake’s briny waters.
From June 21, the M9 Museum of the 20th Century in Mestre will showcase the super-visions of Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky, an unparalleled observer of the relationship between Man and Nature. The exhibition Extraction/Abstraction features 80 photographs and 13 spectacular and dramatic murals, where ethics and aesthetics intertwine in a dense and vibrant dialectical relationship.
