Burning Falls

Koen Vanmechelen's exhibition-event returns to Murano at the Berengo Art Space Foundation
di Redazione VeNews

Burning Falls is the title of the exhibition produced by the Berengo Foundation, which hosts it from 8 April to 15 May on the occasion of Homo Faber, In the City section. The brilliance of Murano glass and the tones of Carrara marble are skilfully combined by Koen Vanmechelen to recreate some key figures of classical mythology.

After the amazingly well-received exhibition Seduzione, produced by Berengo Studio, Belgian artist Koen Vanmechelen is back in Murano, Venice. A painter, sculptor, performer, and all-around eclectic figure, Vanmechelen’s interests range from anthropology to bioethics, human rights, biogenetics. He focuses his research on the concept of hybridization (of both plants and animals) and contamination, in terms of art technique and materials. Burning Falls is the name of his upcoming exhibition, produced by Fondazione Berengo.

It will be open from April 8 to May 15 as part of the Homo Faber programme, In Città section. Shining Murano glass and Carrara marble blend beautifully in the form of staples of classical myth: the Medusa, a red tiger, and other fantastic beasts. This art, created together with master glassblowers at Berengo Studio, shows the elemental concepts, the archetypes, that have been feeding human fantasy since forever: life and death, humanity and godliness, worldliness and spirit- uality, natural and artificial. According to Vanmechelen, art is the connective tissue of human existence: it opens new perspectives and links us together, no matter our diversity.
During the same timeframe, Fondazione Berengo also hosts exhibition SottoVetro, with unique art by Andrea Anastasio, atelier oï, Bethan Laura Wood, Francesco Vezzoli, Joana Vasconcelos, Moritz Waldemeyer, Nao Tamura, Richard Woods, studiopluz, and Thomas Demand.
