An all-star jury, a tribute to Tinto Brass and the first predictions about the films. Venice 83 is beginning to take shape through official announcements and rumors, while anticipation grows for the selections that the Lido will unveil at the end of July.

Just over two months before the Venice Film Festival, Venice 83 is beginning to take shape. The International Jury of the Competition will be chaired by Maggie Gyllenhaal, director, actress, screenwriter and producer, back behind the camera this year with The Bride! after her directorial debut The Lost Daughter, awarded Best Screenplay in Venice and later nominated for three Oscars. She will be joined by Kaouther Ben Hania, Daniel Blumberg, Francesco Casetti, Xavier Giannoli, Shahrbanoo Sadat, and Johnnie To: a group bringing together directing, film theory, music and different geographies of contemporary cinema.

The Festival will also pay tribute to Tinto Brass with Deadly Sweet, chosen as the pre-opening film. The 1967 pop thriller, shot in London with Jean-Louis Trintignant and Ewa Aulin, with graphic consultancy by Guido Crepax, will be presented in a world premiere 4K digital restoration by the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia, with the support of Netflix. It is a choice that brings back to the Lido a less obvious Brass, suspended between pop art, comics, giallo and freedom of montage. The official selection will be announced at the end of July, but speculation is already underway. Among the names circulating are Aaron Sorkin, Florian Zeller, Fernando Meirelles, Martin McDonagh and Werner Herzog. On the Italian front, expectations focus on new works by Nanni Moretti and Andrea Pallaoro, with further rumours around Gianni Amelio, Daniele Vicari and Mario Martone. For now, Venice keeps its cards close to the chest.
