Fiaba A Contemporary Fable

World premiere of La mort i la primavera by Marcos Morau at Teatro Malibran
di Sara Abra Carrol Smersu

La mort i la primavera, Marcos Morau’s latest creation, premieres on August 1 and 2 at Teatro Malibran. Inspired by the most complex and visionary novel by Mercè Rodoreda, this contemporary fable blends dance, poetry, and unease, staging the ambiguity of existence and the tensions of a humanity suspended between death and rebirth.

The piece draws from La mort i la primavera (Death and Spring), a novel by Mercè Rodoreda, one of the most prominent Catalan-language authors of the 20th century. A fierce opponent of Franco’s regime and a strong advocate for Catalan independence, Rodoreda wrote with raw intensity, often confronting the essence of life and its ultimate meaning. As she once wrote: “Death fled my heart, and when I no longer had death inside me, I died.”
Rodoreda’s idealism and complex inner world resonate throughout her works, and most powerfully in this novel, whose title itself encapsulates the existential tension at its core: death as an end, a void; spring as rebirth, growth, love.
Born in 1982, Marcos Morau trained in choreography at Institut del Teatre de Barcelona, the Conservatorio Superior de Danza de Valencia, and Movement Research in New York. In 2005, he founded his company, La Veronal. With this work, Morau transforms Rodoreda’s story into a visual experience – an immersive journey where images, bodies, and movement combine to ritualize harshness. He builds a bridge between literature and contemporary dance, shaping a layered narrative that fuses aesthetic invention with political and spiritual reflection. But is this performance merely a fiction set in a dystopian world with the atmosphere of a dark fable? Or, perhaps more disturbingly, is it a mirror of the world we already inhabit?
Let us experience the piece and try to dispel death with the most powerful tool we have at hand – love.
