Until May 11, the exhibition “A Cabinet of Wonders” celebrates art and nature, offering a journey through wonder, science, and craftsmanship.
The Museum at Palazzo Grimani houses A Cabinet of Wonders, an amazing art exhibition that celebrates art and nature with a disparate collection of items and artefacts from the George Loudon Collection. The exhibition will be open until May 11, and comprises two sections. The first part is dedicated to curio cabinets, a trend that started in the Renaissance. These cabinets were used to keep curiosity items coming from all corners of the world. Often rare and mysterious, they evoke the age of discovery, a time when such people as Giovanni Grimani, the former owner of this palace, collected rare antiquities and refined art. The second section focuses on Loudon’s life as a collector. He was a modern art enthusiast who also collected scientific objects and paraphernalia, such as papier-mâché botanical models, natural history glass models, educational material, all presented as pieces of art in their own right. A Cabinet of Wonders is a celebration of art collecting and an invitation to reflect on wonder as the motor of knowledge and creativity. Past and present meet in an innovative vision that gives more power to creations once relegated to educational purpose alone.
