At Biennale Danza 2025, Friends of Forsythe marks the Italian premiere of a groundbreaking collaboration between William Forsythe and RubberLegz. Blending ballet, hip hop, and folk traditions, the piece celebrates the universal power of movement as a force for connection, transformation, and cultural dialogue.
What narratives can today’s myths offer? What is the role of contemporary artists? These is what 2025 Venice Dance Biennale director Wayne McGregor investigates with programme Myth Makers. If myths have historically provided a framework for understanding existence, morality, and the cosmos, then in times of upheaval or transition, when traditional beliefs and structures falter, humanity must craft new narratives to face uncertainty and inspire hope. Artists, as the eternal creators of myths, have a moral duty to respond.

Using new narratives, they can foster connection, belonging, and purpose. In a programme designed to offer new perspectives and tools, McGregor chose William Forsythe, a master of contemporary dance, as a guiding light. Friends of Forsythe, co-commissioned by Biennale Danza, will premiere at Teatro alle Tese. Created with choreographer Rauf Yasit (aka RubberLegz), it features six dancers blending folk, ballet, and hip hop in a vibrant tapestry. The piece celebrates the universal power of movement to transcend social, cultural, and political barriers, uniting people through the transformative force of dance.
