Realm of light

Mataaho Collective celebrating the sacredness of Māori knowledge
by Marisa Santin

Amplified by its impressive dimensions, the installation that poetically spans the entrance space of the Corderie dell’Arsenale earned the Mataaho Collective the Golden Lion at the 2024 Biennale Arte.

One of the central elements of the Mataaho Collective’s work is the takapau, a finely woven mat traditionally used in ceremonies, particularly during childbirth. In the Māori world, the takapau holds a profoundly sacred meaning, symbolizing the moment of birth and marking the transition between the realm of light (Te Ao Marama) and the realm of the gods (Te Ao Atua). The womb, in Māori conception, is considered a sacred space where children are in direct connection with the deities, conferring an aura of sanctity and mystery to birth. The installation, which welcomes visitors at the entrance of the Arsenale, incorporates materials that include straps and tools used to secure and support moving loads. The tapes that make up the installation are the same ones used to create safety gear for workers in hazardous work environments. Often paired with fluorescent colors, these uniforms are designed to be noticed, even though the people wearing them are often destined to remain invisible. The choice of materials and attention to detail thus reflect the collective’s desire to highlight the importance of community and collective labor, fundamental values in Māori culture. The installation, observable from multiple perspectives, reveals an intricate structure through a play of light and shadow filtering through the woven patterns, creating a multisensory environment – both material and immaterial – that resembles a maternal womb, instilling a sense of trust and security.
