In the performance Songs of the Bulbul, scheduled for July 26 and 27 at the Biennale Danza, Rani Khanam, with her uniquely personal style, directs dancer Aakash Odedra, a star of the contemporary dance scene.
Renowned Indian dancer and choreographer Rani Khanam is a leading figure in the classical Kathak tradition and a disciple of the legendary Pandit Birju Maharaj. Kathak, rooted in sacred temple storytelling since the fourth century BC, later evolved through its encounter with Islamic court culture, gaining sensuality, elegance, and technical brilliance. In Songs of the Bulbul (July 26–27), Khanam will direct acclaimed dancer Aakash Odedra, known for his expressive, autobiographical style. The performance centres on the bulbul, a nightingale from Sufi mythology symbolizing divine beauty. Trapped and caged, the bird finds transcendence only through death – a metaphor for spiritual liberation. The story unfolds through Kathak’s intricate footwork, symbolic gestures, and dizzying spins, set to Rushil Ranjan’s devotional music. The piece premiered in Edinburgh in 2024 to critical acclaim for its emotional depth and visual richness. As the final notes fade, the audience is left to reflect on the intimate resonance of this poetic, cross-cultural journey.
