The solid and the void

Joshua Serafin, a manifesto of diversity
by Irene Machetti
Joshua Serafin Void

Filipino artist Joshua Serafin’s “Void”, included in Adriano Pedrosa’s Foreigners Everywhere exhibition at the 2024 Venice Art Biennale, is a visual and conceptual journey into generative void.

The art is a 9’14’’ video installation that explore the concept of void not as absence, but as a range of possibilities. Using the movement and gestures of a non-binary person, the artist offers a vision of tropical futurism that overcomes the conventions of patriarchal imperialism. Serafin stated that Void depicts the birth of a non-binary deity, which is played in the video by Serafin diving into a pool of a black, thick liquid, like oil, while Calvin Carrier’s guitar plays along.

The video mirrors onto the floor and everything is dark and deep blue, like in a sci-fi movie. The art is rooted into Filipino creation myth, reinterpreted in queer and trans performances that prefigure a future where gender diversity is appreciated. The strength of Void lies in its ability to turn void into generative force. Joshua Serafin not only offers an allegory of absence, but also invites to reflect on the possibilities of new and original presence, at once human, trans-divine, and post-human. The art is a powerful, deep reflection on human condition and evolution, as well as a radical, innovative vision on modern art. We shall find ourselves questioning if void is really empty, and what possible words are generated in dance and performance art.
